Life Skills

The Daily Habilitation Service section of the Adult Services Program at Carey Services consists of person-centered training in a wide variety of living skills.  The goal in all training is to assist our consumers in decision-making and becoming more independent in normal life activities.  Depending upon the need of each participant, training may occur individually or in a group setting.  Classes may take place at the agency, in the community or in the conumer's home.

Day Habilitation is provided as a part of the Adult Services Program at Carey Services.  Case Managers meet with each consumer and his/her personal representatives to discover what the person wants and needs to learn.  These preferences are considered in developing a plan to assist the person to become more independent in carrying out the activites of daily life.  Habilitation staff use the Individual Program Plan as a guide in working with the consumer to learn the skills needed.

Training is provided in several skill areas: cognitive, communication, domestic and community living, leisure and pre-vocational.  Instructional methods are geared to the individual consumer's learning style.  Classes may be held individually or in groups.  When possible, activities take place in the setting where it is most likely that the person will use the skill.  Attempts are made to help the consumer establish relationships within the community which will decrease the need for staff supports.  Adaptations are made and technical assistance is used whenever possible to ensure that the consumer will enjoy the greatest level of success.

While in a few instances success may be determined by how well a skill is performed compared to a "normal" standard, in most cases the measure of success is the satisfaction of the individual with his/her improvement in completing a task.
