    Library Hosting Creative Hearts Art Exhibit

    As part of National Disability Awareness Month, an exhibit of artwork from the Creative Hearts Art Studio has opened at Marion Public Library.

    The exhibit, which opened March 13 and will be on display through the end of the month, showcases more than 30 art pieces produced by artists who participate in the agency’s art program. The art includes paintings, painted tote bags and pillows as well as large sculptures.

    Many of the art pieces are for sale. To make purchase arrangements, call the studio staff directly, (765) 668-8961, ext. 221.

    The library is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

    February is National Disability Awareness Month

    Carey Services is joining with other disability advocates around the country to observe National Disability Awareness Month in March.

    In Indiana, more than 19 percent of the state’s population are children and adults with disabilities. The goal of the month-long observance, which has been occurring for more than 70 years, is to increase awareness of those who have disabilities while also promoting inclusion and independence for all people.

    This year’s theme and poster artwork — “I’m Not Your Inspiration” — emphasizes an important fact: people with disabilities are people first and defined by their abilities, not the challenges they might face. They are co-workers, classmates and neighbors who want to be fully included in their communities like everyone else.

    Self-Advocates Visit State Officials

    Members of the Alliance Seekers of Grant and Blackford Counties were part of an annual visit to Indianapolis on Tuesday to visit with state officials and talk with them about disability issues.

    The event, sponsored by The Arc of Indiana and Self-Advocates of Indiana, is part of a traditional visit by self-advocates and other disability advocates every Valentine’s Day. The theme of this year’s event was “DSPs — The “Heart” of it All,” highlighting efforts to increase wages paid to direct support professionals who provide care. The advocates spent the day talking with the legislators who represent them and also visit with other state officials. Self-advocates from Carey Services presented legislators and state officials — including Gov. Eric Holcomb and Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch — with candy jars produced in the agency’s art studio.

    January Newsletter Available

    Carey Services has released the January edition of Access, the monthly newsletter that highlights agency activities.

    The Access newsletter features agency plans for a new event, “A Night at Carey,” which will be a dinner, awards program and dance to honor local people who are advocates for, and supporters of, people with disabilities. Also in the newsletter is the first article our new Caring and Serving series that highlights client success stories.

    Carey Services Artists Create Holiday Cards

    Carey Services is selling holiday cards that feature holiday-themed artwork created by artists participating in our new art studio. We’ve selected six pieces of art that will be turned into holiday cards you can buy and send this holiday season.

    Each card will have a simple holiday message to reflect the spirit of the season: “Wishing You the Best This Holiday Season.”

    You can order an assortment package of 12 5-inch by 7-inch cards and envelopes (two of each piece of art) until Dec. 8. Each 12 pack is $19; the artists who created the cards will receive a portion of the proceeds for their work.

    Carey Services sponsoring employment services training

    Carey Services is sponsoring training for job coaches and job developers involved in the employment services field.

    The training will be Dec. 8 and 9 at Ivy Tech Community College in Marion.

    Training will be conducted by staff with Norwich Consulting Services. Mike Heifner is a senior employment consultant with NCS and has more than 25 years as an employment services professional. Laura Cummings is a program consultant with NCS and has extensive experience in the employment services field.

    Cost of the training is $119 for each session; someone who attends both sessions will get a discounted rate of $99 for each.

    November Newsletter Available

    Carey Services has released the November edition of Access, the monthly newsletter that highlights agency activities.

    The Access newsletter features agency plans for Giving Tuesday, a national charitable observance, and has an announcement about the new I CARE promotional campaign. Access will provide a monthly look inside the agency to show ways the agency and its clients interact in the world in which we live, work and play.

    October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

    Carey Services will participate in the 71th annual observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month during October by emphasizing education through the agency’s social media outlets and their website.

    Carey will celebrate the many individuals with disabilities in the local workforce and employers who employ people with disabilities throughout the agency’s nine-county North Central Indiana service area. Area community members are invited to participate as well.

    The theme for this year’s observance is #InclusionWorks. The theme highlights the importance of including people of all backgrounds and abilities in the workforce.

    NDEAM has been observed more than 70 years. It began when returning World War II service members generated interest in acknowledging people with disabilities and their contributions to the workforce. On August 11, 1945, President Harry S. Truman signed a congressional resolution declaring the first week in October “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” The “physically” was removed from the title in 1962.

    “Carey Services is proud to participate in this observance each October,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer. “Of all the special awareness months that are observed each year, this is one that is squarely targeted at our mission of helping people turn abilities and barriers into opportunities by emphasizing community employment and community integration.”

    Carey Services has an employment services department focused on community employment, and many of the agency’s programs have components that help people work toward greater independence. Community employment many times is a high priority for clients.

    “We appreciate the employers in our area who have been open to embracing individuals with disabilities by hiring them,” said Greg Maynard, Carey’s director of fund and strategic advancement. “By focusing on abilities, we can work together to create employment opportunities that benefit both the employee who might have a challenge and the employer who might miss out on a good employee otherwise.”

    EHS Fall Fest will be Sept. 29

    Carey Services Early Head Start and Little Giants Preschool — Head Start are sponsoring their annual Fall Fest on Sept. 29.

    The event will be 4-7 p.m. at The River Church, 759 S. Lenfesty Ave. in Marion. The event is free and open to the public.

    Fall Fest activities are geared toward pregnant women, Early Head Start children (ages newborn-3) and Head Start children (ages 3-5). Many local health providers will have booths and activities, and many agencies that promote health, nutrition, physical fitness and safety also will participate. Free developmental, vision and hearing screenings will be provided.

    DSP Week Includes Governor’s Proclamation

    Gov. Mike Pence has proclaimed the week of Sept. 11-17 as Direct Support Professionals Week in Indiana to celebrate the work of the more than 26,000 DSPs who work in the state. Indiana is one of many states in the country that participate in the national observance.

    The vast majority of Carey Services’ employees are the DSPs who provide direct care. As part of DSP Week activities, the agency’s DSPs will be honored with daily activities.
