It’s time to see people, not punchlines.
That’s a theme for this year’s National Disability Awareness Month, which Carey Services and many other groups observe every March.
This year is the 30th anniversary for this observance, and the official theme of “People, Not Punchlines” was selected to put a spotlight on an unfortunate truth: people with disabilities are often ridiculed or bullied. This campaign uses edgy humor to highlight ways we all can work together to understand each other better. America has 54 million people with disabilities, and adults and children with disabilities represent nearly 20 percent of Indiana’s population.
You can join thousands of advocates and people with disabilities across the state by helping raise awareness on disability-related issues. For more information, visit the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities website here.
