Ariana’s Story of Impact with Early Head Start at Carey Services

Ariana was in a really dark place, feeling like there was no one to lean on. Her pregnancy had been complicated, with seizures, and things didn't ease up after she gave birth. Her daughter was frequently sick with bronchitis and upper respiratory issues, even stopping breathing at one point. Ariana had her own health issues to contend with, and then several family members passed away. It was a really hard time for her.

"People need to know that postpartum depression is real and it is a big deal," Ariana believed. "But there is hope out there and there are people you can lean on. Early Head Start at Carey Services is good! People need to know they are not alone in raising their child."

The Home-based program was a lifeline for Ariana. Her Home Visitor, Tracy Carter, helped her believe in herself

and build her confidence as a parent. Coming from a childhood of abuse, Ariana had fears about being a good parent. Tracy didn’t sugarcoat reality but reminded her, "You do not have to be the unhealthy parent you grew up with. You can check yourself and give yourself space and have a plan."

Tracy helped Ariana see that she had the power to make choices and break the cycles learned in her childhood. Ariana learned that you can get the help you need, but you also have to put in the work. "It's not easy, but it is manageable, and it is a way to have success for you and your family," she realized.
