    12th Annual Duck Race June 23

    As has become tradition, Carey Services’ ducks will take their lap around the lazy river at The Splash House in Marion on June 23. The gates to the Marion Splash House will open at 11 a.m., and the race will begin about 11:45. We’ll have some traditional pre-race fun before the ducks splash into the water for their swim.

    In the spirit of fun, we’re changing the way we are selling ducks this year. In addition to buying a single rubber duck for $5, you now will be able to buy packages, each of which include bonus ducks — which means more opportunities to win. A Quack Pack is six ducks for $25; a Quackers’ Dozen — in honor of Carey Services’ mascot, Quackers — is 13 ducks for $50, and The Flock is 25 ducks for $100.

    We’re also offering more cash prizes this year; five lucky ducks will provide prizes of $1,000, $500, $300, $200, and $100 to their respective ticket holders. Several ducks also will be drawn for additional prizes after the cash-winning ducks are determined. Winners do not need to be present at the race to win prizes.

    Free Special Needs Safety Kits Available

    As part of April’s Autism Awareness Month observance, Carey Services and AWS Foundation are making free safety kits available for families of children who have special needs.

    The kits are designed to safeguard against wandering and other dangerous situations involving children with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The kits will be available, while supplies last, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at Carey Services’ Building C entrance, which is on the Marion Bypass south of 26th Street.

    “These kits are timely and important because kids with special needs can be prone to wandering or being bullied or they can inadvertently place themselves in dangerous situations,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer.

    The goal of creating the kits is to provide families with tools designed to help prevent a potentially harmful situation from occurring and to provide resources if an emergency occurs. The kit is designed to address safety concerns from wandering, bullying and seclusion to safety precaution methods at home and school. Distributing the kits in April is a planned strategy to highlight the annual international Autism Awareness Month observance.

    April is World Autism Awareness Month

    April is World Autism Awareness Month, and April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day.

    The United Nations created the worldwide observance in 2007, and this year is the 11th observance of the proclamation for both specific day and the month of other related observances.

    As of 2016, autism affects about one in 68 children, and the numbers continue to grow. it is estimated that one out in 42 boys will end up being diagnosed with autism, and boys are five times more likely to have autism than girls. It is one of the fastest growing developmental disorders in the United States; it is estimated that a family with a member diagnosed with autism will spend about $60,000 a year on treatment.

    Applebee’s Dining to Donate Event Feb. 22

    Carey Services is in the opportunity-creation business, and here’s your opportunity to easily help the agency.

    On Feb. 22, all you have to do it eat a meal at the Marion Applebee’s at Five Points Mall, and you will help Carey Services create opportunities for the individuals we serve.

    As part of the Applebee’s Community Connections program, Carey Services will receive 15 percent from each check that day. You must present the special Dining to Donate flyer (or show it on your digital device) to the server for Carey Services to be eligible for the donation.

    The donation opportunity is good all day, and carry-out orders also are eligible. Customers just have to present the flyer.

    January Access Newsletter Available

    Carey Services has released the January edition of Access, the monthly newsletter that highlights agency activities.

    The Access newsletter features information about this year’s A Night at Carey event, which will be March 17 at Roseburg Event Center, and will also include annual presentation of The Carey Awards. Also in the newsletter is the monthly installment of the Caring and Serving series that highlights agency success stories, this month focusing on the agency’s annual report.

    Fiscal Year 2017 Annual Report Available

    Carey Services’ annual report for fiscal year 2017 (July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017) is available. The report includes letters from Steve Smithley, board chair, and Jim Allbaugh, president and CEO, as well as financial reports. It also includes an overview of the agency’s service area and programming in specific counties and the agency’s many affiliations.

    AWS Foundation Matching Giving Tuesday Gifts

    AWS Foundation is celebrating its 10th anniversary by suppoting disability services in northeast Indiana on Giving Tuesday 2017. New gifts, and increased gifts to Carey Services will be matched dollar for dollar only on Giving Tuesdsay, which is Nov. 28.

    The increased gift match is made only on the increased amount. For example, if your last gift was  $100, and your Giving Tuesday gift was $125, $25 will be matched by AWS Foundation.

    Creative Hearts Promotional Video Released

    Carey Services has released a new promotional video to highlight the agency’s Creative Hearts Art Studio.

    The five-minute video features artists involved in the program and staff members who help operate it. They talk about the creation of the studio a year ago and how the art program has transformed the lives of those who participate.
