    Two Milestones Observed This October

    October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the 2020 observance combines two major milestones for people with disabilities.

    It’s the 75th anniversary of the national employment awareness observance, which had its beginnings in 1945 when Congress passed a bill declaring the first week of October as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” The observance has come a long way from those beginnings, but the month is still dedicated to raising awareness that people with disabilities can, and want, to work and to encourage employers to consider people with disabilities as viable job candidates.

    This year also is the 30th anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA is a foundational law that has helped untold numbers of people with disabilities to become more engaged in their communities and become more independent.

    Employer Roundtable Oct. 24

    As part of Carey Services’ participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the agency will host an employer roundtable at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 for a time of discussion and to recognize area employers who have supported employing people with disabilities.

    National Disability Employment Awareness Month is observed every October. The month emphasizes  education on disability employment issues and celebrates the many contributions people with disabilities make to the workforce.

    The purpose of the roundtable is to bring employers together to talk about their workforce needs and talk about ways Carey Services might be able to help meet those needs. Employers who have employed people with disabilities will talk about their experiences. The agency also will present annual awards to recognize some of those employers.

    The meeting is open to all business owners, managers and human resource staff members. Light refreshments will be served.

    Carey Services sponsoring employment services training

    Carey Services is sponsoring training for job coaches and job developers involved in the employment services field.

    The training will be Dec. 8 and 9 at Ivy Tech Community College in Marion.

    Training will be conducted by staff with Norwich Consulting Services. Mike Heifner is a senior employment consultant with NCS and has more than 25 years as an employment services professional. Laura Cummings is a program consultant with NCS and has extensive experience in the employment services field.

    Cost of the training is $119 for each session; someone who attends both sessions will get a discounted rate of $99 for each.

    October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

    Carey Services will participate in the 71th annual observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month during October by emphasizing education through the agency’s social media outlets and their website.

    Carey will celebrate the many individuals with disabilities in the local workforce and employers who employ people with disabilities throughout the agency’s nine-county North Central Indiana service area. Area community members are invited to participate as well.

    The theme for this year’s observance is #InclusionWorks. The theme highlights the importance of including people of all backgrounds and abilities in the workforce.

    NDEAM has been observed more than 70 years. It began when returning World War II service members generated interest in acknowledging people with disabilities and their contributions to the workforce. On August 11, 1945, President Harry S. Truman signed a congressional resolution declaring the first week in October “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” The “physically” was removed from the title in 1962.

    “Carey Services is proud to participate in this observance each October,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer. “Of all the special awareness months that are observed each year, this is one that is squarely targeted at our mission of helping people turn abilities and barriers into opportunities by emphasizing community employment and community integration.”

    Carey Services has an employment services department focused on community employment, and many of the agency’s programs have components that help people work toward greater independence. Community employment many times is a high priority for clients.

    “We appreciate the employers in our area who have been open to embracing individuals with disabilities by hiring them,” said Greg Maynard, Carey’s director of fund and strategic advancement. “By focusing on abilities, we can work together to create employment opportunities that benefit both the employee who might have a challenge and the employer who might miss out on a good employee otherwise.”

    October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

    “This is a great time to celebrate employment for people with disabilities,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer. “Our celebration really started in July as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the passage of the American’s with Disabilities Act.”

    Allbaugh said the theme for this month’s celebration is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am.” The 2015 observance also marks the 70th year the observance has been conducted.

    “Employers in our area have been open to embracing individuals with disabilities in their workforce,” said Greg Maynard, Carey’s director of fund and strategic advancement, “but there is still more work to be done to assure individuals with disabilities have employment opportunities. Individuals with disabilities provide quality products, and they are a vital part of our workforce.”

    Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the state. In issuing the proclamation, the governor noted the employment challenges people with disabilities continue to face. “Despite our successes,” he said, “less than 40 percent of working-aged Hoosiers with disabilities are employed; a reminder that we all still have work to do to ensure equal opportunity and participation in the workforce.”

    The Carey Services vision statement drives the agency’s work to improve employment and create other successes for people with disabilities, Allbaugh said. That guiding statement is: “Carey Services envisions all people, regardless of their abilities or barriers, as empowered and equally valued members of the community.”

    The Mr. Canary Co., the creator of the Mr. Canary bird feeders produced by Carey Services’ clients, was recently featured in an article on the Fox Business website.

    The article and accompanying video discusses the background and history of the bird feeders, all of which are produced in Carey Services’ Marion production facility.

    Carey Services Job Fairs Coming

    Carey Services has job openings for several positions and will conduct job fairs in Atlanta, Logansport, Wabash and Hartford City to recruit staff members.

    We will conduct a job fair in Atlanta in Hamilton County on Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hamilton North Public Library, 100 S. Walnut St.

    We will conduct a job fair in Logansport on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WorkOne office, 1 Ivy Tech Way, Suite B.

    We will conduct a job fair in Wabash on Oct. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the WorkOne office, 1143 N. Cass St.

    We will conduct a job fair in Hartford City on Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WorkOne office, 1301 N. High St. Suite B.

    We will have human resources staff to speak with you about the application process, and we will have managers available for preliminary interviews.

    Press Release: Recognizing Direct Support Staff

    CAREY SERVICES RECOGNIZES DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL STAFF

    Marion, IN – Carey Services has announced its participation in National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week. The week of September 7 through 13 has been designated as National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week; Indiana Gov. Mike Pence recently issued a state proclamation in honor of the week.

    “The Carey Services direct support professionals, or DSPs, help individuals and families to turn abilities and barriers into opportunities every day in several Indiana counties,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president/chief executive officer. Carey Services employs 220 DSPs who provide daily services for residents and their families in Grant, Blackford, Hamilton, Wabash and Cass counties.

    “National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week is a time to demonstrate our gratitude locally for the dedicated individuals who work at Carey Services,” Allbaugh said. “These staff work amazingly hard, and they care very much for the people they serve.”

    Carey Services staff will have several activities to assure the DSPs feel recognized during this celebration week, Allbaugh said.

    DSPs are the people who work as direct care workers, in‐home support workers, personal assistants and attendants to ensure that people with disabilities are able to live independently in communities of their choosing. With an industry staff shortage, Carey Services is routinely looking for good, hardworking individuals to work as DSPs.
