    A Night at Carey Tickets Available

    Tickets are on sale for “A Night at Carey,” a special night of dinner and dancing to recognize local people who have strongly supported community inclusion for people with disabilities. Early bird ticket pricing is $70 a person/$560 for a table of eight until March 15. After March 15, tickets will be sold for the regular price of $75 a person/$600 for a table of eight.

    The event, which will include a dinner before the awards program and dancing afterward, will be 6-10 p.m. April 8 at Roseburg Event Center. This year’s inaugural event has a theme of “Paris Masquerade.” As a way to add to the evening’s French theme, attendees will receive masks that will be made in the agency’s new art studio.

    The highlight of the evening will be The Carey Awards, six awards that will highlight involvement with improving the lives of people with disabilities.

    Self-Advocates Visit State Officials

    Members of the Alliance Seekers of Grant and Blackford Counties were part of an annual visit to Indianapolis on Tuesday to visit with state officials and talk with them about disability issues.

    The event, sponsored by The Arc of Indiana and Self-Advocates of Indiana, is part of a traditional visit by self-advocates and other disability advocates every Valentine’s Day. The theme of this year’s event was “DSPs — The “Heart” of it All,” highlighting efforts to increase wages paid to direct support professionals who provide care. The advocates spent the day talking with the legislators who represent them and also visit with other state officials. Self-advocates from Carey Services presented legislators and state officials — including Gov. Eric Holcomb and Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch — with candy jars produced in the agency’s art studio.

    DSP Wages Third House Topic

    One of the prime topics of conversation with state legislators attending the recent Third House forum sponsored by the Marion-Grant County Chamber of Commerce was an initiative to get money added to the state budget that would specifically be used to increase wages for direct support professionals working with disability services providers.

    Third House Moderator Alan Miller from Indiana Wesleyan University lead a discussion that was prompted by a question submitted by Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and CEO. Allbaugh and several other advocates — DSPs, caregivers, clients and other Carey Services staff members — were in the audience.

    Disability advocacy groups have approached the General Assembly seeking $10 million in additional funding in each of the two years of the state budget. The $10 million would be specifically dedicated to increasing wages for front-line caregiving staff at agencies around the state. Disability services providers around the country are experiencing critical staff shortages in care-giving positions, much of which is attributed to low wages. For most agencies, the wage rates are directly tied to the reimbursements they receive from their states; most reimbursements are linked to Medicaid reimbursements.
