    Carey Services Receives Grant County Community Foundation Grant

    Carey Services recently received a grant from the Community Foundation of Grant County to help youth and adults with disabilities find and maintain community employment.

    The $6,700 grant will be used to help two distinct populations find and maintain employment: Marion High School students participating in the School-to-Work Transition Program and long-term Carey Services clients. Carey Services is one of five agencies in the state piloting the STW program for eventual statewide adoption. The program goal is to help students with disabilities who do not wish to pursue post-secondary education as they enter the adult employment world.

    The grant will be used to fund stipends during the job-search process and also will provide money to support clients with needs, such as transportation to and from work, after they find employment.

    October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

    Carey Services will participate in the observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month during October by emphasizing education through the agency’s social media outlets and website.

    Carey will celebrate the many individuals with disabilities in the local workforce and employers who employ people with disabilities  throughout the agency’s nine-county North Central Indiana service area. Area community members are invited to participate as well.

    “This is a great time to celebrate employment for people with disabilities,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer. “Our celebration really started in July as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the passage of the American’s with Disabilities Act.”

    Allbaugh said the theme for this month’s celebration is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am.” The 2015 observance also marks the 70th year the observance has been conducted.

    “Employers in our area have been open to embracing individuals with disabilities in their workforce,” said Greg Maynard, Carey’s director of fund and strategic advancement, “but there is still more work to be done to assure individuals with disabilities have employment opportunities. Individuals with disabilities provide quality products, and they are a vital part of our workforce.”

    Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the state. In issuing the proclamation, the governor noted the employment challenges people with disabilities continue to face. “Despite our successes,” he said, “less than 40 percent of working-aged Hoosiers with disabilities are employed; a reminder that we all still have work to do to ensure equal opportunity and participation in the workforce.”

    The Carey Services vision statement drives the agency’s work to improve employment and create other successes for people with disabilities, Allbaugh said. That guiding statement is: “Carey Services envisions all people, regardless of their abilities or barriers, as empowered and equally valued members of the community.”

    United Way Rock the Way Event Sept. 12

    Carey Services will participate in the second annual Rock the Way event sponsored by United Way of Grant County. The event will be noon-8 p.m. on Sept. 12 in Gas City Park.

    Carey Services is one of 14 United Way of Grant County partner agencies. The event is designed to showcase the impact United Way of Grant County and its partner agencies provide while also increasing awareness of all local not-for-profit agencies. The event will feature live music on two stages, food and local vendors.

    Mr. Canary Bird Feeders

    Mr. Canary and Carey Services on Indianapolis TV

    Carey Services and the Mr. Canary bird feeders produced in the agency’s production facility recently were featured on an Indianapolis television news segment.

    WRTV (Channel 6 in the Indianapolis area) produced the feature as part of the station’s “Made in Indiana” series. Station anchor Beth Vaughn interviewed Mr. Canary founders Jan Long and Christina Mowery, Carey Services President and Chief Executive Office Jim Allbaugh and several Carey Services production workers for the segment.

    Carey Services Becomes SourceAmerica Affiliate

    Carey Services has become an affiliate of the SourceAmerica national network.

    SourceAmerica is a national not-for-profit organization that is one of the leading sources of job opportunities for people with significant disabilities. SourceAmerica works with the Ability One Program to create opportunities to bid on federal government contracts. SourceAmerica also provides training and consulting for affiliate agencies. It has more than 550 community not-for-profit agency partners.

    Carey Services’ production facility works with several regional clients to meet various assembly and production needs. The workers produce the Mr. Canary bird feeders sold nationally through several large retail chains. Workers also do assembly work for local companies.

    July is ADA 25th Anniversary Month

    It was 25 years ago this month that President George H.W. Bush signed the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act that has significantly changed the way people with disabilities are able to interact with their communities.

    Bush signed the legislation on July 26, 1990. The law has five main provisions (or Titles) that revamped national disabilities laws in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, telecommunications, and miscellaneous other areas.

    In the ensuing years as the law’s provisions have been implemented, people with disabilities have been able to become much more included in their communities through increased employment options and greater access to community services and opportunities through the removal of potential barriers and the creation of increased support services.

    Afena Sponsoring Summer Vehicle Loan Promotion

    Afena Federal Credit Union is partnering with Carey Services for a summer vehicle loan promotion that will generate a donation to the agency.

    Through the end of September, Afena will donate $50 to Carey Services for each vehicle loan they provide when the purchaser submits a special promotion voucher at the loan closing. The promotion is open to anyone in the community. The only requirement is the vehicle purchaser has to submit the voucher.

    Caregiver Support Services Funds Available

    The Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services has announced that Caregiver Support Services funds will be available for Fiscal Year 2016 beginning July 1.

    Caregiver Support Services are available on a first-come, first served basis. Applications filed in previous fiscal years do not carry over; applicants must reapply each year.

    To potentially qualify for funds, an individual must meet the state definition of intellectual and developmental disability and the individual’s primary caregiver must select a provider. Individuals could initially receive $500.

    Duck Race Creates Huge Splash

    The 9th Annual Carey Services Duck Race was a huge success.

    The event, conducted at the Splash House in Marion, raised more than $31,000.

    For the second year in a row, the race was a sell-out. Local residents and businesses supported the event by buying all 2,500 available tickets at $5 each. Many local business also sponsored the event, including Round Robins Bingo, which was the race’s platinum sponsor.

    The money raised by the race is used to meet client and agency needs that are not covered by other funding streams.

    The race was conducted in cool rainy conditions, which forced the Splash House to close immediately after the race concluded. Splash House management announced that anyone holding a Duck Race ticket could use their ticket to get one free admission to the facility any day the rest of this season.

    Duck Race Tickets Available

    Tickets are available for the annual Carey Services Duck Race, the agency’s largest fund-raiser each year.

    This year’s event will be June 27 at the Splash House, 2601 S. Adams St., in Marion. The race will begin at 11 a.m. Tickets cost $5 each, and winners do not need to be present to win. Each ticket, though, also is good for admission to the Splash House the day of the race. Race proceeds support Carey Services’ programming.

    First prize is $1,500, second prize is $500, and third prize is $250. Many other prizes also will be available, including a St. Elmo’s Steak House gift certificate, Chicago White Sox tickets, and other items donated from local and statewide organizations.
