    Groundbreaking for New Training & Career Development Center

    Carey Services officials recently announced a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of a $2 million renovation for the transformation from a “workshop” to a robust “Training & Career Development Center” for the community.

    The groundbreaking ceremony will be Monday, October 10, 2022 at 1:30 pm at Carey Services in their Building C which is the building nearest the bypass across from Lowe’s. The public is welcome.

    During the groundbreaking ceremony, the community will have an opportunity to learn more about Carey Services’ plan for the space being transformed. Carey Services is planning for the space to be renovated. Various community members, Board members, funding partners, individuals served, and Carey Services staff will have an opportunity to participate in a specific and unique ceremony to celebrate the construction project.

    This groundbreaking ceremony comes after more than a year of planning with the Carey Services team and local firm, Halstead Architects after Carey Services received a grant from AWS Foundation to create more opportunities for community-based employment for people with disabilities in this region. Through a competitive bid process, the Carey Services Board of Directors recently chose a local contractor, JGBowers, Inc. to complete the project. This groundbreaking ceremony will be the official start of construction that is planned to be completed by mid-spring of 2023.

    “There is so much awesomeness planned with this project for the people we serve and our greater community,” said Carey Services president/ceo, Jim Allbaugh. “With this new project, we are truly practicing what we preach to maximize the opportunities for people with disabilities to get jobs in the community. We cannot wait to see how this project transforms lives and this community.”

    Carey Services Selected as Lowe’s Hometowns Project

    Carey Services thrilled to share we’ve been selected as a Lowe’s Hometowns project! We are so excited to get started on this project that will create an interactive outdoor recreation space, promoting physical, mental and social well-being for individuals with disabilities, their families and the staff who cares for them. The project will include a walking path, sports court and picnic area and raised community garden beds. We will be sharing the progress as we go here on Facebook and Instagram, so stay tuned!

    Carey Services “Denim & Diamonds” – April 23

    Carey Services is hosting a night of celebration and positive impact on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at The Tomahawk at Meshingomesia. The evening begins at 6:00 pm with a Cocktail/Social Hour followed by dinner and celebration at 7:00 pm.     Pop Up Art Sale & Reception

    On Tuesday, April 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. stop by the downtown branch of Northwest Bank to enjoy an ice cream sundae and check out a Pop Up Art Sale and Reception. With a commitment to make a difference, Northwest Bank has been hosting an Art Gallery and Sale of art pieces made in the Creative Hearts Art Studio at Carey Services. The Creative Hearts Art Studio at Carey Services is a person-centered studio that turns abilities into opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The individuals are guided to explore different forms of art such as painting, woodcraft, jewelry making and beading. The pieces they create are available for purchase, with the artist retaining 60 percent of the selling price. The artists have shared how they enjoy their time in the art studio and the opportunity to earn money allows them to enjoy more activities in the community and purchase items they may otherwise not be able to do. Northwest Bank and Carey Services are partnering to host a reception with art for sale and a create your own ice cream sundae treat after hours at Northwest Bank located at 100 W Third Street, Marion. The reception is open to the public.

    Carey Services Announces 2022 Board of Directors and Elected Officers

    The Carey Services board of directors recently approved the 2022 board of directors and board officers.

    John Jones, previous Vice Chairperson, was elected to serve as chairperson for 2022. Steve Smithley, who had previously served as chairperson and immediate past chairperson, was re-elected immediate past chairperson. Other officers elected include: Phil Bowers, vice chairperson; Cassie Austin, treasurer, and Cathy Weatherspoon, re-elected as secretary. The board officers also make up the board’s executive committee.

    At the December Board meeting, Carey Services said “good bye” to a few long-term and committed board members. Carey Services thanks Rich Orrell and Doug Bryant for their awesome service and dedication.

    “I appreciate the willingness of the many community leaders and people passionate about our mission to give of their most valuable asset, their time, to serve the individuals we serve by participating on our board to help us plan and execute our bold vision for transformation,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer. “I know each board member is committed to seeing Carey Services have even greater impact in coming days and years, and collectively, they share our vision of a world where all people are empowered and equally valued in the community.”

    Two Milestones Observed This October

    October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the 2020 observance combines two major milestones for people with disabilities.

    It’s the 75th anniversary of the national employment awareness observance, which had its beginnings in 1945 when Congress passed a bill declaring the first week of October as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” The observance has come a long way from those beginnings, but the month is still dedicated to raising awareness that people with disabilities can, and want, to work and to encourage employers to consider people with disabilities as viable job candidates.

    This year also is the 30th anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA is a foundational law that has helped untold numbers of people with disabilities to become more engaged in their communities and become more independent.

    New Virtual Tour Released

    In this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re not able to have many visitors in our facilities to ensure the health and safety of our staff members and the individuals we serve as much as possible.

    But, we do have a way you can learn more about Carey Services and the work we do. You can take a virtual tour of our campus. We have just completed a project to create an opportunity for you to get online and see our campus, watch videos from many of managers and program leaders, and find links and other ways to learn more about the programs we offer to turn abilities into opportunities.

    This tour is the first phase of a project that we anticipate will eventually showcase facilities throughout North Central Indiana where we support individuals.

    The tour should work on most any device that has internet access. For touchscreen devices, you can use your finger much like you would a mouse on a desktop computer.

    Expressions 2020 is Drawing Close

    The 2020 Expressions art event is getting closer. The COVID-19 pandemic has made us change the way Carey Services’ annual exhibition of creative expression is presented. It hasn’t, however, dampened the enthusiasm of the artists and staff in the Creative Hearts Art Studio.

    Join us the week of Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 as we celebrate the work of the studio’s artists and staff through online presentations on our Facebook page. You’ll also be able to buy art pieces in the studio’s online store. And, in what has become an Expressions tradition, we’ll have an auction for selected art pieces. The auction this year also will be conducted online and run the entire week of the event. As always, the artists will receive 60 percent of all proceeds from art purchases.

    DSP Week Activities Planned

    Carey Services will recognize staff members the week of Sept. 13-19 as part of its participation in National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week. The local observance is part of an annual national effort every September to recognize staff who provide daily care for people with disabilities. Gov. Eric Holcomb has issued a proclamation honoring the 26,000 DSPs in Indiana.

    “The Carey Services direct support professionals, or DSPs, help individuals and families to turn abilities into opportunities every day in several Indiana counties,” said Jim Allbaugh, Carey Services’ president and chief executive officer. Nearly two-thirds of Carey Services’ 260 employees provide daily services for residents and their families in the agency’s service area.

    DSPs are direct care workers, in-home support workers, personal assistants and attendants who ensure that people with disabilities are able to live independently in communities of their choosing.

    “Our DSP staff is the foundation of our services and do heroic work every day,” Allbaugh said, “but with the COVID-19 pandemic and all of the impacts on our programs and those we serve, all of our staff really has risen to the occasion this year to continue to fulfill our primary purpose of ensuring the health and safety of the individuals we serve.”

    Carey Services staff will have several activities to assure employees feel recognized during this celebration week, Allbaugh said. In addition, other agency staff will be recognized for their outstanding work.

    With the focus on honoring those who already are doing the work, Allbaugh said, the week also is a time to get the word out about the rewards of the job and the need for more caring, passionate people who are interested in helping others. You can explore our DSP job openings by clicking here.
