Employer Roundtable Oct. 24

As part of Carey Services’ participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the agency will host an employer roundtable at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 for a time of discussion and to recognize area employers who have supported employing people with disabilities.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is observed every October. The month emphasizes education on disability employment issues and celebrates the many contributions people with disabilities make to the workforce.

The purpose of the roundtable is to bring employers together to talk about their workforce needs and talk about ways Carey Services might be able to help meet those needs. Employers who have employed people with disabilities will talk about their experiences. The agency also will present annual awards to recognize some of those employers.

The meeting is open to all business owners, managers and human resource staff members. Light refreshments will be served.

October Disability Employment Awareness Month

Carey Services will be one of numerous organizations that will participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October. The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.

This year’s theme is “Inclusion Drives Innovation.”

The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Library Hosting Creative Hearts Art Exhibit

As part of National Disability Awareness Month, an exhibit of artwork from the Creative Hearts Art Studio has opened at Marion Public Library.

The exhibit, which opened March 13 and will be on display through the end of the month, showcases more than 30 art pieces produced by artists who participate in the agency’s art program. The art includes paintings, painted tote bags and pillows as well as large sculptures.

The library is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

February is National Disability Awareness Month

Carey Services is joining with other disability advocates around the country to observe National Disability Awareness Month in March.

In Indiana, more than 19 percent of the state’s population are children and adults with disabilities. The goal of the month-long observance, which has been occurring for more than 70 years, is to increase awareness of those who have disabilities while also promoting inclusion and independence for all people.

This year’s theme and poster artwork — “I’m Not Your Inspiration” — emphasizes an important fact: people with disabilities are people first and defined by their abilities, not the challenges they might face. They are co-workers, classmates and neighbors who want to be fully included in their communities like everyone else.

A Night at Carey Tickets Available

Tickets are on sale for “A Night at Carey,” a special night of dinner and dancing to recognize local people who have strongly supported community inclusion for people with disabilities. Early bird ticket pricing is $70 a person/$560 for a table of eight until March 15. After March 15, tickets will be sold for the regular price of $75 a person/$600 for a table of eight.

The event, which will include a dinner before the awards program and dancing afterward, will be 6-10 p.m. April 8 at Roseburg Event Center. This year’s inaugural event has a theme of “Paris Masquerade.” As a way to add to the evening’s French theme, attendees will receive masks that will be made in the agency’s new art studio.

The highlight of the evening will be The Carey Awards, six awards that will highlight involvement with improving the lives of people with disabilities.

2016 Indiana Disability Poll Available

The 2016 Indiana Disability Poll is now available online.

The poll is one way people can provide input to state officials on how to improve the Indiana disability plan. The online survey has six categories for someone to provide responses:

A person with a disability
A parent, family member or guardian completing the survey for a person with a disability
A professional or service provider completing the survey for a person with a disability
A parent, family member or guardian of a person with a disability
A professional or service provider without a disability
An interested community member without a disability
